Although all seems quiet at the moment, please be aware that the opportunist burglar is around in our area and is being successful. Make sure you, your neighbours, friends and holidaymakers use your security at ALL times. Tell holidaymakers that if they go out to make sure they do not leave windows open and if they are on the outside of their properties to make sure gates and doors are locked.

Although all seems very quiet on burglaries in our area, please be aware that opportunist burglaries are occurring in many areas. Make sure that your security is used at all times even when you are at home. Let holidaymakers in your areas aware of this as they do tend to leave windows open when they go out and also when outside the property doors and gates are left unlocked.

Yesterday, Monday 9th May at about 10.00 a British couple took a large amount of sterling to the Cam Bank in San Luis to pay into their account. The bank teller, Juan dealt with their transaction. They then needed to withdraw 6,200 euros in cash. Juan told them he could only give them 3,000 at that time but if they came back in 15 minutes he could let them have the whole amount. They went for a cup of coffee and returned to the bank. Apparently, at this bank, any transactions over 3,000 euros are dealt with upstairs. They came back downstairs with the money, left the bank and got into their car. Immediately they went to move off they realised they had a flat tyre. As they were getting out of the car a man appeared out of nowhere saying that he was a mechanic. He already knew they had a flat tyre and which wheel it was. He was in his late 20's, short dark hair, wearing a white T-shirt and and dark trousers. He had tattoos on the inside of his left arm and appeared to be Spanish. The couple were very suspicious. The husband opened the boot and locked the car. The "mechanic" grabbed the jack and tried to persuade the wife to get down with him to look at the wheel saying that he had a bad back, she refused and told him to go away. The "mechanic" had no idea how to use the jack and when he realised he was getting no co-operation he eventually gave up and left. The husband changed the wheel himself and when they took it into the garage to be repaired they were told that it wasn't a puncture but had been cut with a knife so they had to buy a new tyre. It was about 10.30 by this time. They went back to the Cam bank to report the incident to Juan. He told them that at the time they were in the bank a smartly dressed couple were also in there. Both of them separately asked to change 100 euros into 5s. There is a camera operating in the bank but Juan said the pictures go straight to their Head Office so they were unable to view the operation. The couple had told nobody they were going to change the money. It was a last minute decision. How did the robbers know which car to target? They got out of the car before they went to the bank and did not return to it until the end of the transaction. They have not reported this to the Guardia, as they did not lose anything and it takes so long to go down and do a denuncia.

My friend and I were in the Merca China San Luis, chatting away, and choosing some artificial flowers. We took no notice of the unobtrusive man standing a couple of yards away to the side of my friend, looking at some items. That's what people do in the Merca China. Suddenly a man came pushing between us stretching across to pick up some of the flowers. He asked my friend to pass him one sort that he couldn't reach and then another. He said thank you and left. When my friend went to pay, of course her purse was missing out of her bag. It was inside a zipped pocket in her handbag which was being worn across her chest. It was so quick. I just stood there and watched it happen without seeing anything. Alarm bells didn't even ring. I cannot believe I was so useless. The man was Spanish, middle aged, slightly tubby, short dark hair. The other man was so unobtrusive that I couldn't even tell you what he looked like.

La Rosaleda / Los Frutales - Mugging

Please be aware when you are out at night. An elderly lady was stopped on Thursday night at around 10pm whilst out walking her dog (Greyhound). She was approached near to Dr Wacksman by a black man who grabbed her by the hair and positioned a knife to her throat before taking her jewelery and running off. This is a very nasty and frightening attack so please make sure you are safe if you have to go out at night.
