Cumbre del Sol (in Benitachell) is the biggest single urbanisation on the Costa Blanca. After a small but unwelcome increase in petty theft from villas, a group of neighbours put together plans to form a branch of Neighbourhood Watch in Spain. The launch, chaired by the Mayor, was on 5 June 2014 and attended by well over 100 people of many different nationalities. We now have had our first AGM and a new president and supportive committee. There are more than 300 members, 30 coordinators and two lead coordinators.

There are more than 300 members, 30 coordinators and two lead coordinators. We currently only cover Cumbre del Sol, but it is our intention to expand into all areas of Benitachell in due course. This will require additional coordinators. We are equally focussed on the safety of holidaymakers and residents and home-owners alike and work well with the local Police here in Benitachell and Guardia Civil in Jávea There are some 2,500 properties and 250km of roads but only two road entrances. There are Neighbourhood Watch signs at the two entrances. 200 individual signs have been placed on personal properties belonging to members. The Town Hall has paid for another 18 larger signs placed strategically across the mountain. Our campaign to have cameras placed by the Town Hall in cooperation with the police has so far resulted in two working cameras being places on Cumbre del Sol. Signs and explanatory maps (in a joint project by the Town Hall and VAPF) help visitors and services to find houses on Cumbre. We have produced a wide range of documentation, which is available to all members. Other promotional literature includes a leaflet advertising good security practice and these are displayed in the Town Hall and the Tourist Office, as well as in the police station and on the police Facebook page. Where possible, we try to provide everything in Spanish, English, German and French. We have two significant challenges. Firstly, to raise awareness of the need for personal vigilance and, secondly, to find ways to increase our membership. Membership of Neighbourhood Watch continues to be entirely free. We hold contact details for all members. Contact details are This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and 634 343400.
